VSIA “Latvijas valsts ceļi” (LVC) launched the next phase of state road lighting modernisation in May. By the end of July, 50 additional lighting installations are set to be upgraded, with a total of 1,919 luminaires replaced with modern LED solutions.
The modernisation is being carried out by SIA “RCG Lighthouse” under a 3-year contract signed in late 2024 for the modernisation and maintenance of the state road network lighting system. The company’s responsibilities under the contract include not only luminaire replacement, but also the maintenance of existing lighting installations, remote monitoring of equipment, periodic servicing, and the prompt resolution of operational faults.
As in the previous phase, the new LED luminaires will be installed in place of the existing sodium luminaires, using the current cable infrastructure and poles. The lighting profile will remain in its existing configuration, while the benefits will be significant — lower energy consumption, a longer service life, and improved light quality on the road.
Project Scope
Following the successful completion of Phase 1 — in which 52 state road sections were modernised in January and a light dimming function was introduced — work is continuing at pace. The number of luminaires planned for Phase 2, at 1,919 units, exceeds the 1,730 replaced in Phase 1, reflecting the rapid pace of modernisation.
The state road network lighting system comprises 8,414 luminaires in total, illuminating more than 200 kilometres of state roads. At the time the contract was signed, 45% of luminaires were still outdated and due for gradual replacement. The completion of Phase 2 will continue to reduce this share, bringing Latvia closer to a fully modernised and energy-efficient state road lighting network nationwide.
